01 -
In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 1 1/2 cups flour, sugar, salt, and yeast, then stir together. Add in the softened butter and blend until it looks like loose crumbs.
02 -
Heat the milk between 110 and 115°F. Pour it into the dry ingredients with the vanilla and lemon zest, then mix until everything is evenly combined.
03 -
Crack in the eggs and beat the mixture for 2 minutes. Slowly add in more flour until the dough is firm. Turn it out on a floured counter and knead for 5-7 minutes until it feels smooth.
04 -
Grease a bowl and place the dough inside, turning it to coat the surface. Cover with a cloth and let it rise someplace warm for around 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
05 -
Cut the dough into 8 equal bits. Roll each piece into a rectangle roughly 10x5 inches. Spread Nutella on them, sprinkle with crumbled halva and a handful of chocolate chips. Roll up tightly, slice lengthwise, twist the halves, and form each piece into a bun shape.
06 -
Let the shaped buns rest and puff up for half an hour. Bake at 375°F for 15-20 minutes until they’re golden brown. When they’re still hot, brush them with the sugar glaze if you’re using it.
