Chicago Spaghetti Meat Sauce (Print Version)

01 - 2 tablespoons olive oil
02 - 1 lb Italian sausage
03 - 1/2 lb ground beef
04 - 1 cup onion, diced
05 - 4 garlic cloves, minced
06 - 1 cup green bell pepper, diced
07 - 28 oz crushed tomatoes
08 - 6 oz tomato paste
09 - 2 cups water
10 - 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
11 - 2 teaspoons garlic powder
12 - 2 teaspoons dried oregano
13 - 2 teaspoons dried basil
14 - 1 teaspoon onion powder
15 - 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
16 - 1/3 cup parmesan cheese
17 - 1 lb thick spaghetti
18 - Kosher salt, to taste
19 - Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

# Instructions:

01 - Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook spaghetti until al dente. Drain and set aside.
02 - In a large pot over medium-high heat, add olive oil. Brown the Italian sausage and ground beef, breaking the meat into pieces with a wooden spoon.
03 - Add onion, garlic, and green bell pepper to the pot. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until softened.
04 - Stir in tomato paste, granulated sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried basil, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
05 - Deglaze the pot with water and add crushed tomatoes. Bring the sauce to a simmer and let cook gently for 30 minutes.
06 - Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Toss the cooked spaghetti with the meat sauce and parmesan cheese. Serve immediately.
